I created PDFKaj to make everyday PDF and image work more private, especially when handling confidential accounting documents.
How the technology works
PDFKaj is a browser-based web application. Supported PDF operations use libraries such as pdf-lib and PDF.js; image tasks use browser canvas APIs; OCR uses Tesseract.js and language data; spreadsheet exports use SheetJS. These components run on the user's device for the local-processing tools. The website still needs to deliver its page code and some generic assets, and individual features can have different requirements.
The optional PDF Document Assistant is a separate workflow: when a user supplies their own OpenAI API key and explicitly consents, extracted document text and the question are sent to OpenAI. That exception is described in the Privacy Policy. Do not use that optional feature with confidential material unless your own data policy permits it.
Open development and feedback
PDFKaj's source code and issue tracker are available in the public GitHub repository. Visitors can review the implementation, report reproducible bugs without sharing private documents, and suggest improvements. The site is maintained by its creator; it is not presented as a certified security audit or a substitute for professional compliance advice.
For support, corrections or accessibility feedback, use the Contact page. Please share the tool name, browser/device and a description of the issue, but do not send passwords, identity numbers or confidential source files.
